ABOUT ABOUT

NYC GREEN ROOF ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY LABORATORY

Join us for the second Field Trip as we continue exploring NYC K-12 schools that employ sustainability strategies for educational excellence.

This project, nicknamed "GELL" and completed in 2012, is an outdoor observational learning space created to raise awareness of urban sustainability. It is the first green roof installed by NYC School Construction Authority. We will discuss its role in educating students, as well as its environmental benefits: reducing stormwater runoff, moderating the heat-island effect, and improving local air quality. We will also review benefits to the school itself: reduced energy demands and improved acoustics.

Our guide Vicki Sando is a Green STEM teacher & Environmental Science Program Developer at Greenwich Village School.

We hope you will also join us for the next tour in this series on September 21st at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School on September 21st.

SPEAKER:
Vicki Sando, Green Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) teacher & Environmental Science Program Developer & School sustainability coordinator, PS 41
