While Times Square has long been an icon for entertainment, culture and urban life, the physical and operational conditions of the streets and sidewalks has taken a toll over time, detracting form this critical crossroads. Following the hugely successful pedestrian-only public spaces piloted in 2009, the architectural firm Snohetta plans to transform the clutter and chaos while keeping the Times Square's charm intact. Claire Fellman, landscape architect with Snohetta, will discuss where the project is, where it's headed, and why this change was needed. Jennifer So Godenzo, the Planning Director for Transportation Alternatives, will address the advocacy behind this project to cut down on the traffic problem and to make a more pedestrian-friendly space.
