ABOUT ABOUT

The influence of hospitality design is evident everywhere people work, live, and play. Hospitality is a design narrative rooted in comfort and support in a service related industry. Today, the Millennial Generation is a driving force behind the current trend to incorporate the elements of successful hospitality design in the workplace, high rise residential rental buildings and even health care facilities. These recent graduates put a strong emphasis on the experience within a space and how it resonates with how they see themselves. They tend to seek environments that are familiar to them; workplaces that enable them to work 80% collaboratively and 20% alone; multi-family dwellings that provide lounge areas to congregate in. The demand to bring amenities like rec rooms, gyms, and gaming tables into everyday adult life is growing each year.

Even medical offices, now equipped with flat screen TVs in their waiting areas, are designed with a nod to hotel lobbies, layering textured and dimensional materials to evoke a more spa-like than clinical feel. In corporate offices, food pantries previously located in the back of the house have been moved closer to the reception area to promote interaction. It’s like taking all the “luxuries” of a Student Union and translating them into upscale spaces where the incoming generation feels welcome.

To capture this trending topic the Hospitality Forum has put together an esteemed list of panelists led by Architectural Systems President Nancy Jackson. Mrs. Jackson has moderated similar panels for the past four years, closely monitoring the changes that have been taking place in the industry. Annie Lee practices flexibility with regard to the client’s vision and social purpose. Brad Rim has worked with City MD, a medical practice tailored to the Millennials, offering 24/7 medical services for those who need greater control and flexibility over their schedules. Barry Richards from Rockwell Group embodies the idea of each project being its own story, having its own unique voice. There is a newfound need in hospitality to feel accommodated and cared for in an environment.

This presentation will address the challenges faced by designers, developers and health care professionals to create environments that allow for different scopes of experience and connection.
